Coldfusion Introduction

Sep 23, 2006
I have been working with the Coldfusion Application Server since 1998. Back then version 3.1 was out. I started out using dbase IV as the database server and to learn on, until my boss introduced me to MySQL in 1999, which is what I still use. I later moved on to working with versions 4, 4.5 and now work with Coldfusion MX 6.1. I currently have an Advanced Coldfusion Certification in Coldfusion MX that I received in December 2004.

I work on all types of projects, which include writing whole applications, to testing, debugging and maintaning code. I haven't worked with any type of specific framework in the past, but am currently learning how to use the Model View Controller (MVC) method of programming, especially with the ease and functionality of using Coldfusion Components. I like the way it tries to simulate the object oriented programming of JAVA and is something I have always wished to see in Coldfusion. This blog application I wrote and maintain is currently written using mostly CFC's and I'm trying to implement the MVC the most that I can.

I also have and continue to install and administer the Coldfusion server itself. I have worked on connecting to databases, setting up verity searches and tweaking coldfusion for optimal performance.

These are some of the types of coding I have worked on:
  • Interfacing and using Java libraries within CF code
  • Working with webservices such as SOAP and XML to both send and receive data
  • Using AJAX to update text and images on a page
  • Developing search interfaces to relational databases
  • Administrative and secure backend
  • Reporting

These are some of the administration tasks I have performed:
  • Installation of Coldfusion on Solaris, Redhat, SuSe and Windows
  • Tweaking of JVM to increase server performance
  • Monitoring server performance

Some areas I would like to explore are:
  • Creating CFX's using JAVA

In the future, I hope to share certain hurdles I have come across while programming and share solutions I have come up with or found from other websites.
