Dog and Cat Poop Composting

Mar 8, 2008

I've been trying to figure out what to do with the dog waste that Anastasia leaves in the backyard. She's really good at always pooping in the same area, so I never have trouble finding where she went. But as to where to put it after she poops, that's another question. When I used to live at my house, there is a conservation area in my backyard that goes a few miles back. So I would just throw her poop as far back as I could into it.

Currently, I just throw the poop behind some bushes and away from any edible garden plants. So far that's been working good. I never smell anything and it must be decomposing, because I don't see it piling up. But, I've been wondering if there is a better way or if I can compost it to use as fertilizer.

I am also having the same dilema with the cat liter. Right now we use wheat litter, that is says on the box we can mix in with our mulch. And that we can flush down the toilet. In the beginning I used to do this, but after time it just filled up in the cat liter box too much that it was just easier to bag it and put it in the trash. I would like to try other uses or maybe just force myself to use the toilet method again. Maybe if I do it religiously every morning or evening after work it will become a habit. Otherwise, I'd like to find other methods for this too.

For the past couple of years, we have been composting all of our non-meat food waste, plus paper based bags and egg cartons. But I've read that dog and cat poop can't be mixed in with it because of dangerous pathogens.

I'm going to try doing some research on the matter of how best to compost of dog and cat poop, and place some links here to help me and others:
