Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park

Feb 9, 2008

The drive to rocky mountain national park was only about 10 minutes. The entrance fee in was $20, which included a weeks worth of reentry's. If you lived there and planned to visit frequently, you could purchase an annual $35 pass. We ate the $20 fee and saw it as going to a good cause.

The drive in took us through winding roads up and into the mountains. There were a few parking areas with picnic tables and bathrooms. The road we were taking took us into a dead end with one of these picnic areas. We got out to walk around, but realized we wouldn't get far because the snow was just too high. There was another young couple there who put on snow shoes and that's when we realized we were ill equipped.

After walking where we could for about 15 minutes, which wasn't far, we headed back on the parks roads and ended up leaving out a different entrance. A little ways past the entrance, we found the ranger’s visitor’s station and went in. It was a small one room museum with pictures and life size models of the local wildlife. There were some narratives and recordings on the forest life.

We wanted to see some elk and moose, so we inquired on any sightings at the front desk. The lady helping us was very nice and friendly. She tried to sound encouraging that we would see some, but at the same time said there had been days since a sighting and that many of the animals have ventured to the lower parts of the mountain.
