Flight to Italy

Sep 15, 2007

I spent 3 weeks, from September 16th to October 5th 2007, in Italy. The plan was to spend 5 days along the Amalfi Coast, 3-4 days in Rome, about 3 days in a Villa in Cortona (a small town in Tuscany), 5 days in Florence and the last day in Orvieto. Everything went pretty much according to plan and even though it was non-stop sightseeing, Italy still has much more exploring to do, even in the towns and cities we did visit.

I flew out of Orlando on September 15th, taking a connecting flight in Philadelphia and flying over 8 hours to land in Leonardo DaVinci airport (AKA Fumuchino) in Rome. The flight to Philadelphia was uneventful. Philly’s airport was very large, since it’s a major hub. It took me about 20 minutes to walk to my connecting flight. I brought my backpack on this trip and decided to carry it on the planes, so I wouldn’t have to check it in and wait for it at the airport carousels. I saw the 20 minutes walk, plus the other 20 minutes searching for food as good exercise to prepare me for all the walking I would be doing. Plus I wasn’t going to get any walking done during the 8 hour flight to Rome.

After eating a pretty good chicken wrap, which I ordered from I think an Indian who didn’t speak much English because I had to explain to him what went in the type of chicken wrap I ordered, I made some final phone calls to friends coming and my parents, before boarding the plane.

They served a decent dinner and eventually dimmed the lights about 2 hours into the flight. Just about everyone was asleep, except the lady next to me who had her light on and was doing a puzzle book. I had to wrap my head with a blanket to keep her light out and probably slept at least 4 hours, waking up a couple of times during that time.

The passengers and I were awoken at about 7am Italy time and we were served a sugar roll. I noticed some ice capped mountains out my window, so assumed we were over the Alps. About an hour later we landed in Rome about 30 minutes early, because the plane was able to catch the trade winds. I got off the plane and headed for immigrations and in search of an ATM.
