Green Earth Expo and Eco-Action

May 17, 2008
Today, I was invited to volunteer and be a representative for Eco-Action at the Green Earth Expo in the Orlando Convention Center. I was excited to do it and help recruit other volunteers to help us clean lakes around Central Florida and just to meet other like minded people.

Beth setup a stand with pictures of animals tangled up in garbage, the canoes used and even examples of the type of trash we've collected. And there was an assortment of fliers to hand out. The setup was very helpful to illustrate to passerby's the type of work Eco-Action does. Mostly everyone seemed interested in the work. We were probably one of the few stands where we weren't pushing some sort of product.

I was scheduled to work the stand for 2 hours, from 12pm-2. I probably got there 20 minutes early and didn't leave until about 3:30. I got to take breaks in between and check out some of the other exhibitors. It seemed that every time I spoke to someone about Eco-Action, my mouth would dry up and I had to take a gulp of water. I was happy that I considered bringing my own quart sized water bottle, that I almost finished before I left.

Most of the other exhibits were interesting. We were in between an environmentally friendly pest control company and a soap company, against the left wall of the hall. The 2 big rows of exhibits were on the right side of the hall and were mostly of solar cells, hybrid cars and hydrogen cars.

Some exhibitors didn't seem to have a green angle, such as Washington Mutual and Appliance Direct. I guess at least Washington Mutual had a raffle for a green goody bag....whatever that is. I did enter it.

My replacements did come, although I didn't see them, because I was walking around. By the time I got back to the booth to pick up my things, they were also walking around the exhibit hall. Beth and Frank did stay the whole day and returned the next. I hope to see some of the people I talked to at future cleanups.
