Peru: Cusco - First Day

Aug 21, 2005
That morning I was still feeling sick. I wasn't feeling as weak in the knees as I did in the middle of the night. We only had a couple of hours to catch our flight to Cusco, so I went to find a bottle of Gatorade and decided to drink only that and water the whole day.

The flight to Cusco was ok and lasted only about an hour. When we flew into Cusco I was still feeling sick, but more to my stomach than anything else..

At the airport we were picked up by an employee of the hotel we were staying at called Torre Dorada. The hotel itself was located within a residential neighborhood. It was 4 stories and I was staying on the 3rd floor, in the same room with Grant and his friend Natasha, who both had just flown in from the states. We had an orientation with the trekking group United Mice that evening, where we were to get ready for our 5 day trek and camping to Machu Pichu.

From the hotel, we were given a ride by another hotel employee to the main square. We met Jane and Olive, friends of Rita who came in from California. Some of us went to eat some roasted chicken. At that point I still couldn't eat and the thought of food made me feel sicker. I think I might have tried a little soup.

We all met for the orientation at the United Mice headquarters, except for Grant who was missing. We had all given them a $110 deposit when we were still in the US. They passed out some papers and one of the papers mentioned not to go on the trek if you were sick, especially because it was a very extensive physical journey up and down mountains. At that point I was still not feeling very well and hadn't eaten in over a day and all I wanted to do was lay down and rest. Plus, we had to wake up at 4am where they would pick us up from our hotel. I decided I wasn't going to be strong enough to make it on the trek and left, unfortunately losing my $110 deposit.

I left the orientation and took a taxi back to the hotel, where I passed out. I was awaked in the middle of the night as Grant and Natasha were leaving on the trek. At that point I didn't know what I was going to do, since the next 4-5 days were planned for the trek and I was going to find myself all alone in Cusco. I went back to sleep, not knowing what to expect in the morning.
