Purple Azaleas, Indian Hawthorne, Holly and wasps

Oct 22, 2006
I got back to planting some more bushes in my yard this weekend. I added 2 more Purple Azaleas to the left back side of my house against the wall, which now makes 3 of them there. Then I put 3 indian hawthorne in front of the Azaleas. For the hollies, I already had 2 holly bushes on the right side of my house against the wall and added a couple of more to fill in the area.

I didn't have any mulch, so couldn't fill in around the new Azaleas and Hawthorne and I will have to do that next week. I might also plant some annuals, such as Mexican Heather between them to prohibit weeds. I'll have to see if I can get a good deal at my favorite nursery Green Acres.

I have some vines growing along my fence in the backyard that fell over. I tried tying them back up and as I was putting the string through the fence, I didn't notice a wasp nest in front of my face. I don't know if it was the same wasp, but within a couple of seconds, one stung my left hand and then my forehead. I immediately went inside and put rubbing alcohol on the stung areas. The stinging didn't last as long as past stings I've had....probably only about 5-10 minutes. I soon went back outside, pulled out my hose and sprayed the wasp nest off the fence. I could see some of the baby wasps falling to the ground and the adults flying away. That was the last I saw of them.

To my dissapointment, a mineola tangelo tree I've had growing for about a year was loosing all its leaves. It didn't look completely dead and I'm hoping it comes back. I fear that some weed and feed I applied to my lawn 2 weeks before may have got to the root system. At the time, I tried not getting to close to the citrus tree, but I guess the roots spread out farther than I thought.

The grass also doesn't seem too great in the back yard. I'm thinking of putting more trees back there and just putting some type of ground cover, such as minima jasmine.

Otherwise, everything else looks good. The mexican bell I planted a few months ago was sprouting lots of new branches. The blue daze is spreading out nicely under the red maple. For next time, I will be getting more mulch and try planting some more azaleas or maybe viburnum along the left side of the house. I'd also like some creeping fig for my back wall and finish getting to vines to climb my fence nicely.
