Routine During COVID-19 Quarantine

May 7, 2020

When I found out I was going on furlough, I right away outlined a routine to follow for the unknown number of days to follow.

I outline it all in a spreadsheet, I titled Unemployment, that has a bunch of tabs with different ideas and a more refined list of routines to follow...such as my strengthening workouts.

Original Plan

In my Google Drive spreadsheet, in a tab labeled Routine, this is the original plan I laid out:

Wake up and warm up I have plantar fasciitis, so I do some warm up exercises before I get out of bed
Start drinking at least 3 glasses of water

Bathroom stuff
Take probiotics/ allergy meds - I didn't want to confuse allergy symptoms with COVID-19 symptoms

Body warm ups Myrtle exercises and squats to warm up body
Yoga Yoga with Adrienne
Breakfast Usually yogurt and fruit
Read / Daily to-dos Usually sit in front of computer and read emails, current events, create a to do list for the day
Strength workout I have an at home workout circuit I've been developing, I try to do for about 30 mins.
Protein shake 2 bananas, 10 teaspoons oatmeal, water, chia seeds, 1 inch chunk ginger, protein powder, glutamine, BCAA, matcha powder
Shower
Training An hour for 4 hours with about 15 mins break added on to each hour
Training
Lunch Usually 3 eggs and a vege

Dinner Usually fish or chicken, and a vegetable, a beer
Movie/Entertainment

Talk to someone
Read something
Sleep

Progress

Over a month later, I've pretty much stuck to the routine.
  • I completed a 30 day Yoga with Adrienne Home challenge she put out earlier this year, before any major talk of the outbreak occurred.

  • I created a nice at home strength routine.

  • I've mostly stuck to the diet...except I've gone a week or 2 without a beer..so failed there ;)

  • I might be eating more ice cream and pies....but usually limit to buying once a week.

  • My shakes haven't deviated too much. I have cut out the BCAA, because that stuff is just nasty...even if I add an extra sweetener like honey.

  • And my training, which I was most concerned about, allowed me to create a basic version of this blog, while learning how to program in React and Node.js.

Financial Stuff

In addition to my original goals:

I went through my bills and cut out extra expenses and consolidated services, which includes:
  • Moving this website from Amazon EC2 to a free year at Google Cloud

  • Switching to YouTube music from Spotify. I was already paying for YouTube and I didn't see why I needed to pay for 2 services that were basically the same. I really enjoy commercial free YouTube videos, so wasn't giving that up.

I put my house in Florida into contract and should close by weeks end!

I'm currently learning how to swing trade. Not sure how that's going to go though and I'm just evaluating it for now, mainly through Zip Trader  https://www.youtube.com/user/jc4x4

I renewed my apartment lease. I was originally going to negotiate with them, but then realized they were already undercharging me compared to market value. I only signed a 1 year lease though, speculating the rental market in NYC will decline in the next year and hoping I can get better deals then. Also, unemployment, plus the additional stimulus has been very generous.

And I started a little herb garden, I hope to expand on.

What I Haven't Done

I thought I would bike more. The first couple weeks I was biking to the beach, around Prospect Park and a couple miles to Whole Foods. After hearing all the ambulances and seeing how full the hospitals were, I didn't want to risk getting injured. I hope to get out more soon.

I also thought I'd walk more. Instead I've stayed inside an average of 6 days at a time. Same as biking, I don't want to risk catching COVID-19 and adding to an already stressing health system.

Moving Forward

Since I don't see life changing much soon, I'm content continuing with my plan and look forward to building up my skills and hopefully getting out more. There is so much to learn and I have to take a step back sometimes, as not to overwhelm myself.
