Brasil: Rio De Janeiro, Copa Cabana Beaches, Rio Backpackers, World Cup against France and Coconuts

Jul 1, 2006

After a couple hours of sleep, we headed to the local Sao Paulo airport and took our flight to Rio. We got a taxi through the airport and the drive spoke english and was telling us about some of the sites and how copacabana is a man made beach.

The hostel we stayed at is called Rio Backpackers. It was at the top of a hill on a cobblestone street. When we got in a young man working there didn't seem to be expecting us. He didn't speak english, but was able to get us into our room anyway. Having only a couple hours of sleep, we passed out.

The place wasn't the best hostel I've been too. It was musty and our room was right next to the kitchen, so there was some noise while trying to sleep. After our nap, we got to talk to some lady who I think ran the hostel. She invited us to watch the Brasil v France game later on. She also told us of Churasco buffet we could eat lunch at. We also asked about some of the tours they had posted and were hoping to take one that afternoon, but because of the football game, they were all cancelled. So we booked a Favella tour the next morning.

After following her directions, we ended up at the churrasco restaurant, about 5 blocks from the hostel. We seemed to be in a mostly middle class residential area, with a couple of main street. The restaurant was good. It was like most buffets, plus they would come out with different types meats. We eventually had to turn them away we had so much meat

From the restaurant, we walked out to the beach about 4 blocks away. We were being kind of cautious again after hearing from a friend that there were lots of street kids that I guess might cause some trouble. We didn't notice any problems while out there and found the beach rather empty, compared to the many videos of brazilians worshiping the sun. We walked along the beach and board walk for a couple of hours. I got a coconut at a local stand that I was able to drink out of and some kind of puffed bag of food stuff. I can only compare it to looking like pork rinds, but a milder taste like rice cakes.

We started heading back to the hostel at 4 to watch the Brasil v France game. It was interesting to see all the stores starting to close down and everyone dressed with brasil shirts and with flags hanging from their apartments. Back at the hostel, we went to the 3rd floor where there was a commons and a balcony. A few of the other hostel residences were there, who all seemed to be British, plus the owner of the hostel's friends. They served us free caphrina's and we watched the game. Unfortunatly Brasil lost and one of her friends was cursing at the tv.

We didn't end up doing anything that night. If Brasil won, we might have gone to some parties, but most people didn't seem in the mood. Besides, we were still tired from the wedding night.
