Brasil: Sao Paulo Bus Tour, Lingerie Party and Clubbing

Jun 29, 2006

We were finally able to get a hold of Fe and Kevin in the morning. It turns out they were robbed in their car while waiting at a red light yesterday. Their cell phone, plus other belongings were stolen from them and is why we couldn't get through to them. Our plan was to meet them after lunch for the tour. So we walked a few blocks to a mall and had some lunch there. We ate in the food court at this place that sold steaks and chicken meals. It probably took us about 15 mins to order because of not speaking Portuguese. I basically just wanted this steak and eggs dish that was on the menu, but they kept asking me questions. I kept insisting that I want exactly how the picture looks, but it took a few minutes for them to understand that. I think they wanted to make sure I understand some of the items cost extra. The meal was good, especially for the price of $R12.

Afterward we met up with Kevin, Greg and his wife Kim, Kevin's father, step mother and his 2 friends Chris and Bill from NJ and Kevin's uncle and bf. We met them in the lobby for the tour and we all jumped into a van. As we were heading to our destination we realized something wasn't right. At first the tour guide wasn't speaking English really well. Most of us, including me, thought he was joking, but as the tour went on we realized he only spoke Portuguese. Along the tour I was personally disappointed, mainly because we only had a couple of days here and this was going to set us back a day. Keven actually did a better job at explaining certain sites we saw. These included a church, the subway station and the location of the first settlers of Sao Paulo. We then stopped at a market and had a bite to eat and drink. Chris was taking pictures and I was kind of cautious on that since I didn't want to stand out as a tourist. After awhile we all agreed that the tour was a waste of time without an English guide and we stopped the tour. On the way back to the hotel we debated on how we should complain to the hotel, which organized the tour for us. Kevin ended up complaining to the hotel and they said there was a mistake and we were supposed to get an English speaking tour guide, so they said we didn't have to pay. Some people paid the tour guide anyway, but I was still disappointed that the day was pretty much wasted and didn't pay. I probably should have paid something, but they also knew we all spoke English and the guy who drove us from the airport yesterday was even there before the tour with the tour guide and should have known we all only spoke English.

Anyway, we went back to the room to get ready for later on in the night. They had a lingerie party planned that everyone was invited too. We all piled into a couple of cabs at about 6pm. The place was in someones condo in a high rise, which was located in a I suppose a middle class part of town. The entrance had 2 guards and a double gate. It took us about 10 mins to get in the place while we waited for someone to let us in. The party was on the first floor in a gathering room with a kitchen and sitting room area. They served sandwiches, refreshments and desserts. We also got to meet some of Fe's friends, some of whom lived in the states for a little while. 2 of her friends were Carol and Vivian, and they talked to us about some places to visit in Rio. The lingerie party was fun. All the girls had to buy Fe something and write a secret message on it and Fe had to guess who wrote it. If she guessed wrong, they got to dare her to do something silly.

Later on, a few of us planned on going to a club. Carol and Vivian drove us there. It was us 3, Kevin, Fe, Chris, Bill and Sean and his girlfriend(whose name I can't remember). By this time I felt I drank enough, even though I had one more drink at the club. After that I could only drink water. To get in they patted us down and the cost was about R$10. To buy drinks you had to purchase this chips, similar to gambling chips, from one place and then use them at the bar to get your drink. So you needed to know what you wanted before your bought your chips. The club was really cool and played mostly 80's American retro. It had 3 floors, the main floor with a live band and 2 lower floors, the second playing the 80's music and the bottom being a type of lounging area whose music I can't remember at the moment. Chris took some more pictures I'm going to try getting a hold of them to post here. Chris also seemed upset that the band was stealing a lot of American music and mixing it with their own stuff.

I think it was about 3am when we were ready to leave. Unfortunately we couldn't find Chris and Bill. The last time we saw Bill, he had 2 girls with him and that was probably about 2 hours before. We looked around for about an hour and gave up, hoping they had left already. On the way out Carol got a cab for us and said we should set a price and somehow decided on R$30. Also, she wanted to meet up with us in the morning to give us a tour and to stop by some market she said was really good. Anyway, we went back to the hotel and went to bed.
